Kumiko is a traditional Japanese decorative technique used to create intricate wooden panels and geometric patterns without the use of nails or fasteners. In this workshop, participants will learn the fundamentals of Kumiko by making a small panel featuring the classic Asa-no-ha (hemp leaf) pattern.
The session begins with making a half-lap X joint using a hand saw and magnetic guide blocks to create a precise grid. Once the grid is complete, participants will cut and fit infill pieces at specific angles—45°, 22.5°, and 67.5°—to form the final flower pattern. Each participant will complete and take home a finished Kumiko panel.
